Passive LCD

Custom Passive LCD Displays

A passive LCD is a low cost option when a display is needed for an application that doesn't require a high performance display. The difference between a passive-matrix and an active-matrix LCD is that the passive matrix has a grid of horizontal and vertical wires and at the intersection there is an LCD element that makes a single pixel. The active-matrix LCD has a transistor on each pixel, which allows for more contrast, higher resolution and faster response time.

When Should You Consider Creating a Custom Display?

1

Your new design requires application-specific changes that justify moving beyond a standard display

2

You already have a design and need a display that matches your design

3

Many projects begin with a standard off-the-shelf product and then move to targeted changes once application requirements are clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between passive LCD and TFT?

A passive LCD has a grid of wires with an LCD element at each intersection. A TFT (active matrix) has a transistor on each pixel, allowing more contrast, higher resolution, and faster response time. Passive LCDs are lower cost and ideal for simpler display needs.

What LC types are available?

TN (Twisted Nematic), STN (Super Twisted Nematic), FSTN (Film-compensated STN), and VATN (Vertical Alignment TN). Each offers different contrast, viewing angle, and cost characteristics.

What shapes are available?

Round, rectangle, square, and multiple cut shapes. Passive LCD glass can be cut to a wide variety of custom shapes.

All custom displays follow our Engineered Display Solution Process (EDSP) — from technology selection through EVT, DVT, PVT, and mass production.
